Pomeranian Timber Goes Live with Neural Grader Linear Compact Scanner

Polish beech specialist implements latest grading and measurement technology on its steamed KD unedged beech line

SZCZECIN, POLAND — Pomeranian Timber S.A., one of Poland's leading beech lumber producers, is proud to announce that it is now in production with the Neural Grader Linear Compact scanner on its steamed kiln-dried (KD) grading line for unedged beech boards. The installation delivers highly accurate detection of defects, including red heart, combined with highly precise dimensional measurement and full board traceability.

“Since its establishment, our company has strived to achieve the highest product quality standards. Grading and measuring accurately, at speed, unedged steamed KD rough beech has always been a challenge. We have been looking for some time for technology to automate this process but the precise detection of red heart on rough lumber, which is a key quality criterion for our customers, is notoriously difficult for scanners. The Neural Grader handles this with a level of precision we had not seen before in an automated system. Beyond defect detection, the precision of dimensional measurement is a step change from what we had previously: every board’s dimensions are measured accurately, giving our clients the reliable data they need. With Smart Bundle Technology on top, our clients will now have full traceability from the scanner to the finished bundle in their container.”

— Krzysztof Stepcynski, CEO Pomeranian Timber S.A.

“Rough Steamed KD beech is one of the most technically demanding use cases for a visual scanner. The steaming process creates colour gradients that can mask defects or trigger false positives — and red heart, which is the critical grade-determining defect for this species, is particularly hard to detect reliably because its appearance varies considerably from board to board. We are very proud that Pomeranian joins a growing group of European beech mills benefiting from our cutting edge grading and measurement technology. Pomeranian is the first client implementing our Smart Bundle Technology which will give full board-level traceability to its clients worldwide. Pomeranian Timber is now operating at a level very few hardwood producers in Europe can match.”

Key line parameters

  • Line type: steamed KD grading line for rough unedged beech boards

  • Conveyor type: roller conveyor with Neural Grader vibration-correction software

  • Line speed: 1.5 m/s — one board graded every 4 seconds

  • Board width: variable unedged widths up to 800 mm

  • Scanner footprint: only 550 mm on the line — minimal disruption to existing layout
